Interview with Liz Suburbia of CYANIDE MILKSHAKE I have the opportunity to chat with Liz Suburbia, artist and writer of Sacred Heart. In 2016, she received the Alex Award for the work; the Young Adult Library Services Association listed it as a top 10 Graphic Novel for Teens by the Young Adult Library Services Association. Her zine Cyanide Milkshake was just been published by woman-owned publishing company Gimme Action in November.  The collection is aptly titled Thee Collected Cyanide Milkshake. Gimme Action describes it as:  All seven issues of Liz Suburbia’s mini-comic masterpiece are now collected in one essential volume! 176 pages of hilarious and angst-ridden comics: horny dystopian fantasies commingle with autobiographical vignettes. I talked with Liz Suburbia about the Cyanide Milkshake and the power of zines and punk. Elisa Shoenberger: Whats the power of zines? Liz Suburbia: Id been exposed to for the first time in high school, but not until my senior year of high school. My family was in the military so we moved around a lot and I was still very much a new kid. [My friend Matts older brother, Kevin] was making one regularly at that time and Kevin would contribute some of their own little comics to it. They gave me a copy around Christmas, senior year of high school. That was the first time Id ever heard of the concept of a zine or seen one. Matt who is making this zine called Aftermath continued to make a couple more issues. We went to the same college and he taught me how to do it. Once I was exposed to the idea, it seems like the easiest and most natural thing in the world. It was that or playing music but I didnt have any musical ability. I like tried to play guitar and never got good at it. But I could draw and I was always drawing for myself and I kind of screwed around with a webcomic for a little while at first, like really embarrassing one when I was in high school. But the zine thing was a lot more fun. It was something about the material nature of it where you could finish something and hold it in your hand and give it to your friends. Somehow I thought that was more satisfying than just putting stuff online and assuming my friends were looking at it just because I sent them the link on Aol Messenger. Shoenberger: Could you talk about the creative process and what is punk? You talk about your frustration with people who say That stuff is in my past. Could you speak to those ideas? Liz Suburbia: Its definitely something I believe 100 percent. I feel like I got kind of repetitive talking about it in the little Cyanide Milkshake essays, but making the zine always kind of put me in the mindset where that was the biggest thing that was on my mind. Its still something I think about all the time. I just turned 34 last week, but Im still pretty attached to the whole things like DIY and radical politics and having a weird haircut and all that kind of stuff that comes under the umbrella being into punk. At the end of the day, I still stand by what I was writing in the comic. I feel like the women that I know have really led the way on, sticking to that more than anybody else. They say youre going to get more conservative as you get older. But I know so many cool women in punk and comics and the DIY scene who are just getting more radical and more creative and even more of all of that great stuff the older they get and thats how I want to be. Shoenberger: There were some recurring storylines in Cyanide Milkshake. You have the story of the dogs who are kind of living a life of crime at times. Then the series you call the GBA with an on and off again couple negotiating a relationship during a Zombie apocalypse. There were other stories that felt more like one shots. Could you talk about these storylines? Suburbia: The whole project started out kind of self indulgent where Im just going to write all my stupidest jokes and put them in one place and gave it to my friends. By the second or third issue, I realized that I should use this to challenge myself and branch out and think of new things or new ways to tell jokes or new things that could be considered a comic, like flash cards, pinup posters or activity sheets, classified ads, stuff like that. With the dogs, those are my dogs. I like drawing them and drawing their little adventures because thats what dogs moms like to do. For the other one, its also just an excuse to do a horny relationship comics without having to expand too much on it.  I got kind of attached to them the longer the story went on and wanted to see it through. I think Im still going to use those characters in other comics projects and use that kind of world that theyre in. Thats another thing that the zine was good for. It was just starting with little ideas and branching off from them and using it as a testing ground for them to grow. Theres stuff from my graphic novel, Sacred Heart, that wasnt in the first draft of it because I did an online draft of the book. Then it was picked up by a publisher and I redrew through the whole thing from scratch. But there were a little side stories involving the same characters that I put in Cyanide Milkshake that eventually I redid it and ended up putting in the main book. I looked back on the ones I did for Cyanide Milkshake and they still like them. Shoenberger: Do you see zines being like a incubator? Suburbia: I think they definitely can be. At least for me, the stakes were so low. I know theres a lot of people who work really hard to make their zines an art object, make use really nice paper and really nice covers and really put a lot of thoughts into things like layout and aesthetics and thats something that I super admire. At the same time I am totally incapable of doing myself, you know. I think zines can be both: a way to experiment with an art form for some people and for other people like me, just a really low stakes slapdash way to just put something out there real quick before you overthink it and you get kind of a sense of accomplishment. And if youre like me and youre kind of shy, its a great way to connect with other people without kind of stewing in your anxiety all night. Its definitely helped me make friends. Shoenberger: What do you want people to know about Cyanide Milkshake? Suburbia: I want people to feel like they can make it too. I say this a lot in Cyanide Milkshake itself: if you pick up an issue and you like it, and you think you might want to try it but you’re worried that you wont be good at it, dont worry about it.  I think everybody should try making a zine or a comic at least once just to see what its like. Even if you dont consider yourself an artist or a cartoonist or a zine maker, its a process thatll teach you something about yourself, in a way that can help you move through the world. Caesar Augustus, Hero or Tyrant The Effects of Hindsight on Dio Cassius Portrayal of Caesar - Literature Essay Samples

Jordan Reid BerkowRome of AugustusTF: Brian JobeFebruary 22, 2003Caesar Augustus, Hero or Tyrant?: The Effects of Hindsight on Dio Cassius Portrayal of Caesar Caesar Augustus, during the time of his reign as princeps of the Roman people, cultivated for himself an image of military prowess, generosity, virtue, and clemency. Velleius Paterculus History of Rome, written only a few years after the death of Augustus, paints a picture of the Caesar that one imagines is quite consistent with the way he wished to be portrayed. Dio Cassius History of Rome, written around 229 A.D., presents a very different image, representing Augustus as an uncertain, bullying tyrant. The three ways in which the two authors, in their descriptions of the Battle of Actium, represent Caesars differences most prominently are through his fighting style, his attitude towards his captives, and the attention given to his victory. Through these three vehicles, Velleius and Dio present such radically different vers ions of Caesar Augustus that it is almost impossible to reconcile the two into a coherent image of who the man truly was. Caesars fighting style and character as an opponent are portrayed very differently by Velleius and Dio, with the former presenting Augustus as diplomatic and decisive, and the latter describing him as more of a bullying tyrant than a conquering hero. Velleius opens his description of the Battle of Actium by explicitly stating where his loyalties lie: Caesar and Antonyfought, one for the safety, and the other for the ruin of the world (SB 78). Although numerous sources cast doubt upon Augustus military prowess, Velleius explains Caesars decision to leave the direct action to generals such as Agrippa by stating that Caesar, reserving himself for that part of battle to which fortune might summon him, was present everywhere (SB 78). It was not, then, that Caesar was incapable of fighting at Agrippas level, but rather that he was diplomatically prudent enough to de legate duties when his services would be more effective elsewhere. Dios portrayal of Caesars fighting style could not be more different. In describing Caesars attack on Antonys forces, he uses words such as threatened, provoked and harassed (SB 139). He further casts Augustus as an uncertain and indecisive leader, twice stating that Caesar did not know how to proceed in the face of Antonys tactics (SB 140, 141). Caesars fighting style and leadership capabilities as depicted by Dio, therefore, paint a a far less noble image of the brave and heroic man described in Velleius History. Caesars treatment of Antonys men after his victory is another topic that is treated in radically different ways by Velleius and Dio. Velleius places emphasis to the point of repetitiveness on Caesars clemency a trait that Caesar closely associated with himself, as can be seen in the Res Gestae. Velleius writes that Great clemency was shown in the victory; no one was put to death, and only a few bani shed (SB 78), and shortly thereafter repeats this assertion, writing that It was in keeping with Caesars fortune and his clemency that not one of those who had borne arms against him was put to death by him, or by his order (SB 79). Dio contrarily presents Caesars victory as a terrible tragedy, vividly describing the horrors resulting from Caesars decision to set fire to Antonys ships. While Velleius writes that Caesar shouted to Antonys men that Antony had defected, urging them to surrender, desiring to win over by words those whom he could have slain with the sword (SB 78), Dios account holds no evidence of this aversion to bloodshed. Dio writes of men burned to death, devoured by sea creatures, wounded by missiles, or drowned, and the only men who found a tolerable death in the midst of such horrors were those who agreed to kill each other or who killed themselves (SB 142). After Antonys ships had been completely overtaken, and the survivors had surrendered, Dio writes that Ca esars men eagerly sailed up to Antonys ships in the hope of looting their treasure, busily putting out the fires they had themselves set. As a result many of them perished, the victims of the flames and of their own greed (SB 142). Although these appalling deeds are not directly attributed to Caesar himself, the events, excluded entirely from Velleius description of the Battle of Actium, certainly do not portray a just and forgiving leader, given to great clemency. The third clear difference between Velleius and Dios Caesars lies in the attention paid to the glory bestowed upon Caesar after the Battle of Actium. Dios account ends with the previously described horrors inflicted upon Antonys troops by Caesars corrupt and greedy men. Velleius, however, spends a good deal of time describing the victorious celebrations and general good will experienced upon Caesars return to Rome, and goes on to write about the great benefits conferred upon the Roman people as a result of the vict ory at Actium. Upon Caesars return, writes Velleius, the procession that met him, the enthusiasm of his reception by men of all classes, ages, and ranks, and the magnificence of his triumphs and of the spectacles that he mounted [cannot be described] (SB 80). He underscores Caesars generosity, reporting that in the years following Actium, There [was] nothing that men can desire from the godswhich Augustus, after his return to the city did not bestow upon the state, the Roman people, and the world (SB 80). While Dio focused on the negative consequences of Caesars victory, excluding the purported celebrations, Velleius appears resolved to demonstrate that Caesars win was not only advantageous, but the very will of the gods. As the most obvious discrepancy between these two texts is the elapsed time between the death of Caesar and the era in which the author was writing, it seems likely that with greater distance came a more balanced, less effusive view of the man whose actions wer e so instrumental to the history of Rome. Perhaps, one may conjecture, Velleius closeness in time to Caesars age led him to be unduly influenced by the myth of Augustus, as his parents generation were no doubt direct witnesses to Augustus rule. Whether this closeness provides Velleius with a more accurate viewpoint or clouds his description with an inability to obtain objectivity is, of course, questionable. Dio, with the hindsight conferred by time, was perhaps more able to present an accurate, objective rendition of Caesar Augustus, but he, unlike Velleius, was unable to draw upon first-person accounts of what it was like to live under Caesar. It seems, then, that we are left at a standstill with regards to who the true Caesar Augustus was: A heroic savior, or a vengeful tyrant? Dios decision to focus on Caesars indecisiveness and moral turpitude, and Velleius contrasting determination to convey with absolute clarity Caesars generosity, compassion, clemency, and moral superio rity demonstrate how truly complex, and enigmatic the man was, and how obscure historical truth can be.

So many of my best childhood memories are centered on the shores of North Carolina. Surrounded by all my favorite people and things, there was never a dull moment. Though looking back it seems like we spent every waking moment on the beach and in the water, we also played games inside the beach house, or just hung out and talked while sitting on the porch, looking out at a beautiful beach sunset. When I was younger, no older than maybe six years old, I loved the waves. My cousins would be too scared to go near the big ones, preferring to stay near the shore. But as for me, the daredevil, I looked down upon the wimpy waves, wanting only the big ones that can only be found in deeper water. Once, a big storm hit our beach and all the strong men went out to try to conquer the 10 feet waves. I wanted so much to join them battle the sea. However, my mother would not let me go in. So instead, my cousins and I stayed on the porch watching, amazed at how the calm and peaceful ocean of the daytime could turn into such a monster. But the next morning, the sound of the calm waves crashing on the sandy shore greeted me as I first opened my eyes to the new day in paradise. The peaceful water I knew and loved had returned, waiting for me to go back in. Even the not so great things at the beach will grow on a person. For instance, the fact that sand gets everywhere may bother some people, but not me. And not just the places you would expect it to be, it’s everywhere. Even when you try so hard not to touch the sandy ocean floor, it gets in your swimsuit, the couch, the bed, and the floor. It just seems to follow you in the house, despite the many rugs feebly attempting the stop the sand at the front door. But while at any beach, you come to expect it. I not only came to live with sleeping with sand, but I also started to like it. I never had to leave the beach, even when I was sleeping. There are other down sides to being at the beach, but none of them bother me anymore. For example, no matter how much sunscreen you rub into your skin, you always seem to get sunburn somewhere. Question: Case study Diane had obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) for 26 years, which she has now finally overcome. My earliest memory of the illness was when I was about eight years old. Another ritual, which was a compulsion, was the fear that if I didn't say my evening prayers correctly and sincerely, my mother might be killed in a car accident. I took on this huge responsibility as a child for another person's life. "A lot of people know about the hand washing and the checking of things, but many people are unaware that OCD can also take a sinister angle, where you have a fear that you may harm your own children very violently. "When I had my fourth child I had intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that at bedtime that I would go to the children's bedrooms in my sleep, take out their dressing gown cords and strangle each one. This was horrendous to go through, because I didn't know whether I was going to do it or not- fortunately I did not ever harm my children "That was the obsession: the compulsion was to try to relieve some of the pain and terror that came from those thoughts. I would get out of bed, find their dressing gowns, take the cords out of the dressing gowns and tie them into as many knots as possible, so that I wouldn't be able to put the cords around their necks. "Then I'd go back to bed, but I still couldn't sleep. I would get out of bed again, get the cords, put them in a bag, seal the bag, and put the bag in a high cupboard. This would give a little relief, but it was still terrifying, I was exhausted. "After I saw my GP, I saw a consultant psychiatrist. I was put on antidepressants, which helped me enormously. Medication gave me the strength to sleep and eat well, so I could then have cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which is a psychological treatment that deals with the present. I was able to put my heart and soul into my own recovery. "I often used to ask myself what was wrong with my memory and why I couldn't remember whether the gas has been turned off, even though I'd checked it 13 times and I only checked 10 seconds ago. In fact, people with OCD have a perfectly accurate memory, but what we don't have is a confident memory. CBT can help to restore that." I am worried that my eldest child has OCD they are showing a lot of the behaviours I displayed , I wonder if they have inherited the condition or learnt it from me? Competition Analysis: Heineken is the market leader in beer sales, with 32% total volume sales in 2010. Second is Mahou, with 30%. However, in 2010, Heineken’s strategy to focus on premium lagers caused it to lose share, while Mahou’s standard lager and promotions focus caused them to gain market share. In third is Damm (Estrella, Voll, Xibeca Damm) with 12%. A large number of smaller labels share the remaining sales volume, with many of these brands focusing on niche product markets. To combat the sharp decrease in on-trade sales, major label have increased advertising to promote going out. Interpretation of results We conducted an online survey consisting of both multiple choice and short answer response questions designed to provide a level of quantitative and qualitative analysis. We received 20 responses to the survey, and 90% of these respondents selected ‘student’ in answer to the question ‘what best describes you? ’. 55% of respondents were male, 45% female. The combination of small sample size and a sample heavily skewed towards the student segment means that our research has not yielded result that are representative of the target population. However, we do believe that some of our findings are valuable to our analysis of the market. The survey revealed quality to be the most important influencing factor to our sample in choosing beer (48%). Following were price (32%) and brand (20%) and there were no votes for alcohol content. This indicates that the student segment looks for a quality beer that is reasonably priced and perhaps a recognisable or appealing brand. They do not necessarily drink beer just to get drunk. Our sample did not show a preference for the major Spanish beer labels, with 75% choosing ‘other’ as their preferred beer over Estrella, San Miguel and Heineken (the market leaders). This may be linked to the high percentage of international students completing the survey who prefer their native countries’ brands. As for where and when our sample consume beer, the responses were split between home and bars for location and showed preference for weekends and with friends for when and with whom. 40% of respondents drink beer 1-2 times a week. We can interpret these responses as showing a trend towards casual, social drinking. 100% of respondents indicated that they would not purchase a non-alcoholic beer and do not consider health factors when purchasing beer. This does not support the growth in market share of non-alcoholic beers. Interestingly, 42% of respondents did indicate that light beer was their preferred variety. This could be linked to female drinkers’ preference towards lighter, sweeter beverages. Our qualitative analysis revealed a recurrent theme in word associations the respondents made with beer consumption. Phrases such as ‘chilling with friends’, ‘relaxing on the weekend’ and ‘out with friends at a bar’ were most common. This supports our quantitative analysis that beer is consumed primarily in non-formal, social situations. 6. FCB Matrix [pic] 7. Decision-making Process Buying beer substantially is a low-involvement process since beer is not a very expensive product. We usually buy a certain brand of beer, try it for the first time, make evaluation on the product, then decide whether or not to buy it in the future. The low-involvement decision-making process in fact is a learning as mentioned. We decide whether or not to repeat the purchase by learning from the buying experience. However, we finally decide to use option (ii), i. e. consumption rate and consumption situation as the segmentation variables. We eliminate option (i) and (iii) because of these reasons. For option (i), we feel that the segment with certain kind of people with certain age will be too large for us to focus on in terms of marketing strategy. Different people in the same age with similar occupation may possess different attitudes towards beer. For option (iii), purchase drivers, i. e. the purchase tactics, change over time in different situations since it is a low-involved buying activity. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the precise opportunity to do marketing for a new kind of brand, hence very difficult to target a very special target. However the market trend is showing a growth in home beer consumption. 7d. Positioning We have defined the position strategy for light beer using positioning maps. Since our survey depicts that most beer drinkers do so for socializing in bars, we have zeroed in on price and quality as the preferred attributes (and not necessarily variety, as youngsters feel comfortable with any light beer that has a good taste and reasonable variety). We see that Light Beer ranks moderately high on quality and low on price (only more expensive than non-alcoholic beer). Hence our product is positioned as a moderately low priced Light Beer that ranks medium to high on quality. 8. Product Concept We came up with two different product concepts: a light and cheap beer to be consumed in bars and a light cheap beer to be consumed at home. Both beers are competitive from a price point of view but the beer that has to be consumed in bars should be in a glass bottle of 330ml whilst the beer addressed to the off-trade should be a 500ml glass bottle or can to push further the price competitiveness. We decided we will further develop the off-trade beer because it is more coherent with our qualitative research results and with the market trends. Furthermore the decision to target a niche market, such as home beer consumption, is a better decision for a firm just entering the market, and therefore not ready yet to compete with established beer firms on the open market.
